Panic Braking 

Emergency braking will be necessary if anything unexpectedly happens immediately in front of you. In this scenario, anti-lock braking system  (ABS)-equipped vehicles may stop quickly by simply applying heavy brakes until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. 

When quick, unplanned events like a pedestrian abruptly crossing the street, or luggage tumbling from the car in front of you happen, panic braking may occur. 

To avoid this as much as you can:

• Keep your distance from the traffic.
• Make an effort to stop where other cars can see you.
• Constantly be observing for pedestrians’ or animals’ that may pop onto roadways.
• Look 15 seconds ahead to be aware of upcoming traffic and light changes.

Advancing Car in Your Lane

Although it is hard to prohibit other vehicles from accelerating in your lane, there are things you may do if this happens to you. 

Make sure to flash your high beams and honk your horn right away if a car is coming at you from behind and straying into your lane. Aim for the free portion of the road in your lane by looking into your rearview mirror . 

To prevent a head-on accident, leave as much distance as you can between your car and the one approaching you.

Tire Blowout 

If you find yourself in a situation where your tire blows out in the middle of the road, do these steps:

• Press and hold the gas pedal for a few seconds. This gives you control of the vehicle and points it straight ahead. Lift the gas pedal slowly and gently after a few seconds. Pressing the gas pedal won’t make the car drive any quicker since the drag effect of a fully flat tire is so strong.
• Steer vehicle to the side of the road and out of the way of other vehicles when safe to do
• Avoid placing your feet near the clutch or brake.

Unnoticed Motorcycles, Small Vehicles, and Pedestrians

It can be difficult to spot other vehicles or even pedestrians on the road, especially if they are not as visible. 

Stastically, the National Highway Traffic Safety reports a car turning or crossing an intersection was engaged in around 36 percent of accidents (NHTSA). 

To avoid these incidents, consider where you want to go before turning the wheel. Keep in mind the acronym BLT, which stands for brake, look, and turn. Oftentimes, this requires keen observation out of all the side windows.

Even if you’re going straight, you can see those who are running red lights and stop signs by looking through the side window before you enter a crossroads.

Stabilized Steering Wheel

In the unusual event that a mechanical failure causes your steering wheel to lock up while you’re driving, slow your vehicle and make every effort to bring the car to a full halt on the side of the road. If  this doesn’t free the wheel, then make a help request.

Keep yourself and others safe at all times when driving, and be ready for mishaps. Keeping your vehicle well maintained and repairs made as needed will help keep everyone safe on the road.

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL)

Less-than-truckload, also known as or less-than-load (LTL), is a shipping service for relatively small loads or quantities of freight. Less-than-truckload services are offered by many large, national parcel services as well as by specialized logistics providers.

These services can accommodate the shipping needs of countless businesses that need to move smaller batches of goods frequently. Less-than-truckload shippers offer economies of scale so that freight costs of individual shipments are minimized.

 The big advantage of LTL is that it saves money and is more efficient for smaller shippers.

A partial truckload is when only a piece of the shipment is loaded at once. This is when you need to deliver a part of a supply to the dropping point. If you have 30 kilos of products, the partial truckload will load just 10 kilos, while the remaining 20 kilos will be transported by other vehicles.

Partial trucking services are frequently utilized when very big shipments cannot fit into a single shipping container, and because you just need to transport a piece of the goods at once, there is less risk of damage during transportation.

Refrigerated Trucks

Refrigerated trucks are responsible for carrying perishable goods such as fruits, meats, dairy products, and the like. Refrigerated trailers can travel locally or beyond provincial or state lines. 

Reefer drivers must have extra abilities in order to monitor temperatures and identify technical problems. Minor repairs may be required to keep the cargo from spoiling.

Lowboy Trailer

A lowboy trailer is a type of unpowered trailer that is typically used to move tall objects. Goods carried or transported on a lowboy trailer have surpassed the legal height restriction of goods typically hauled on a flatbed trailer.

A lowboy trailer is a great alternative for moving heavy-duty goods such as construction equipment and agricultural machines. The low height facilitates loading and unloading and aids in keeping the payload level while in transportation, which is critical for preventing damage.

Dry Van Trucker

Dry van truckers deliver nonperishable, lightweight freight. It is frequently packed and transported in a single rectangular trailer connected to a semi-truck. 

A dry van, unlike a refrigerated vehicle, can transport a variety of cargo sizes while being less expensive to operate. While air conditioning and insulation can serve specialty commodities, they cannot move as much freight as a dry van can for non-perishable goods.

A child welfare worker falls into the same category as a family social worker, but the responsibilities are more focused on the welfare of children. They specialize in working together with families to ensure the safety of children.

The core of this career centers on the assessment and response to issues of child abuse and neglect. This is often done through intensive interviews and collaborating with the right agencies to deliver the best level of care.

Similar to family social workers, jobs as child welfare workers will continue to increase, thanks to the growing awareness of mental health. While there is a fairly consistent demand across British Columbia, there is higher demand in the Northern parts of the province.

Road rage happens when drivers get into a difficult situation that causes stress. Oftentimes, the frustration escalates to violent anger that causes aggressive behavior.

Instances like this endanger not only the drivers but also the pedestrians around. When there is road rage, drivers end up making poor decisions that impact the order on the road.

The Dangers of Road Rage

Reports of violent behavior among drivers are old news in British Columbia. In April 2022, The Vancouver News reported that a woman in her 20s was chased down the road out of aggression. The incident happened in Maple Ridge and caused terror within the area.

This is just one of the many road rage incidents that have occurred over the years in the province. The  bottom line in all these cases remains clear: road rage never ends up good.

On top of that, road rage also carries legal consequences when not addressed. This may happen if the drivers involved get arrested on criminal charges.

What Causes Road Rage?

There are many factors that trigger road rage among drivers on the road. This includes frustration over heavy traffic or simply displaced anger.

According to the American Psychological Association, environmental factors also boost anger on the road. The same study also noted high life stress as a common trigger.

What’s interesting about this study is that they found that people who experience road rage are more likely to misuse alcohol and drugs. With these things established, it only becomes necessary to redirect the mind away from road rage.

How Can You Manage Road Rage?

You can’t get close to yourself from feeling a bit of anger while on the road. What’s important is that you learn how to easily manage it. Here are some tips.

Travel early. Drivers often feel annoyed once they realize that they’re late to their destinations. This can easily affect their mood, making them angrier as more time passes by. To avoid these incidents, it’s best to have a time allowance. Give yourself at least a 10-minute head start to have enough time to travel.

Keep your emotions in check. If you feel under the weather, it may not be the best time to drive. It’s also unsafe to take the wheel if you’re already feeling a bit stressed during the day. Take the time to cool down to avoid feeling agitated. It’s best to drive with a happy and healthy mind.

Never be aggressive. Driving awards you a sense of freedom, but it may also give you false confidence. This is why other drivers incessantly honk their horns at the first sign of inconvenience. When this happens, don’t be aggressive with your actions. Stay calm and patient and also think about the consequences of your actions.
